To get a Northwest logo, we have to go back in time -- all the way to 1982.

Among connoisseurs, this logo is known as the "hysteresis". Why? I looked hysteresis up in the dictionary: "The phenomenon in which the value of a physical property lags behind the changes in the effect causing it, as for instance when magnetic induction lags behind the magnetic force". What does this have to do with the logo? Beats me.
